A brief history of the village of

Stanwick, Northamptonshire

The Millennium Village Sign in Spencer Parade was unveiled on 4th August 2000 to celebrate the new Millennium, and a Time Capsule was buried. Funds to finance the project were raised by the voluntary group Stanwick MM, which was formed especially for the purpose in 1998.

The Village Sign was carefully designed to represent important aspects of Stanwick's history:- St Laurence Church; ears of wheat (representing agriculture); a roman helmet (representing Stanwick's Roman heritage); and a boot (representing the boot and shoe industry, and the Duke of Wellington who, it is said, had his first pair of boots made in Stanwick).

The Millennium Sign was designed by a Stanwick resident, and installed by a Stanwick builder, and the design has since been used as the basis for the Parish Council's Chain of Office and the 'Welcome to the village of Stanwick' name plates, which welcome you to the village as you enter via West Street and Raunds Road.

The flower boxes beneath the 'Welcome to the village of Stanwick' nameplates, and the beds surrounding the Millennium Sign, are planted and maintained by Stanwick Environmental Projects (STEP) and are wholly financed by voluntary contributions from the village.
